DECORATION (We call it DECO)

Once the float is built, that’s when we begin to “deco”. The process starts when seeds and dry products are painstakingly glued onto the float. The last few days before the parade are when the live flowers are attached.

Deco Week! The Why, where and who of it all.

Not every float uses button mums. But if you do see them, this is how they are processed.

First judging. All about the storyline of the float.

Traditionally called “Greening”. We take used Christmas trees, trim the branches off for the decking. Once the greenery covers the floatbase, we are can rose/ flower it up.

We usually have upwards of 10,000 roses .Each rose is contained in a vial. First you put on the measuring stick - clip that rose. Put rose in the vial of water. Lastly, take off any dead or damaged petals. You have about 15 seconds to get that rose in water before it coagulates and won't accept water anymore.

Second judging. Judged on esthetics, variety, placement, color, and how well it fit the storyline.

How we prep carnations.

Fun facts for Roses. What your hard work does every single year, and how we find the square footage.

Lastly, we drive the float down the Blvd at night with a convoy for protection, which includes the Sierra Madre Police Department. (Thank you PD)
